Endangered species designated by 5 municipalities of Amamioshima

The five municipalities of Amamioshima (Amami City, Yamato Village, Uken Village, Setouchi Town and Tatsugo Town) have enacted what is known as the common “Ordinance for the protection of endangered species” with the purpose of strengthening the protection of endangered species and passing them on to future generations. There are species which are endemic to Amami, those whose number is limited, or those which are in danger of being illegally collected. Therefore, upon consultation with experts, 22 fauna species and 35 flora species have been designated as species that are prohibited from being captured and collected (October 1, 2013).
